Every Thursday I feature a lovely lady, bloggers as well as other gorgeous ladies I know or meet, who tell us what makes their bodies fabulous! The purpose is to empower women to to accept and love their bodies’ as they are by showing women with various body types, skin colors, hair textures, and more. This week Brasilian beauty Gisella of Collective For Us All stops to tell us what makes her body fabulous!
What makes your body fabulous?
The way I relate to it, not only externally but also internally. From my thoughts to what I eat, everything is important to me. When it comes to food, even if I one day I woke up feeling like feeding myself with ice-cream, for instance, I´d make sure I´d have my favourite, just to make it all worth. I have no extreme ideas and do not get “crazy” counting calories and bad cholesterol before eating but I try to make the best choices. I keep a balanced eating routine, avoiding too much manufactured products and eating in the more I can as I love cooking. I think that the acceptance my genetics and the fact that I am critical when it comes to the dualism media x reality help to not being unhappy if my hips are larger than the girl´s on the magazine. I look at the mirror and feel pleased to live in this body and nowadays I practice the thought “my body is my greatest jewel ever”.
What is your favourite thing about how you look? And why?
The colour mixes I use because they reflect my personality exactly how I feel I am. I also enjoy being versatile and able to apply my style in different situations, from beach wear to office outfits.
What are your favourite things to wear to flatter your body or just help you feel good?
Heels, dress and a proper purse. Together they make me feel like a million dollar. But I think that maybe my hair would be the best answer because even if I am naked, in a good hair day I get powerful somehow. It is an impressive effect on me.
When it comes to finding clothes, what are some issues you come across? And how do you solve them?
I find too small clothes at most places I go, even in luxury brands collections. So I keep a broad list of brands to visit for clothes and respect my style. I like spending some hours just getting in any small shop in Rio searching anything I like. I also go to second hand places because they never let me down and I always find something I like – from clothes and accessories to furniture.
What role do you think the media plays in body acceptance?
Negative most times. I usually say that if you want to be happy with your image, relate better to the magazines and catwalks getting only good inspiration from them. The comparison mirror x magazine will never be good for you because real life and real people are not in Hollywood or on Vogue. What they publish there is a wrong idea of body perfection and this is creating unhappy young woman. There are some campaigns that promote real people at the media but they are still incipient. Here in Brazil the body perfection idea is so wrong, especially in Rio where “beach culture” is the rule. I feel lucky that I have developed criticism on this matter and I try to inspire other girls around me or through my blog. I value natural beauty and promote it on my communication channels.
What are your thoughts on female body acceptance and appreciation?
They should be part of programs at school, for boys and girls around the globe. That would be a great start. Media and fashion regulations should also be on the agenda of society discussions because they are on the top five reasons for one´s negative relation with the body. Self-esteem is a feeling that you must grow inside you but it is possible to get some external help from family, friends and partners. It can be a bit too much but sometimes I think that if people loved themselves better, we would live in a more peaceful world.
I just loved getting Gisella’s thoughts on body acceptance from her Brazilian perspective!! Poor body ideals and pressure cross all cultures.
