The YBIF series was started as a result of a book I started writing many years ago, “Your Body Is Fabulous: Dress Like It,” because I feel style and fashion is nothing if you don’t love the body you’re dressing. So, every Thursday I feature a lovely lady, bloggers as well as other gorgeous ladies I know or meet, who tell us what makes their bodies fabulous! The purpose is to empower women to to accept and love their bodies’ as they are by showing women with various body types, skin colors, hair textures, and more. This week the beautiful Joanne of Fabulously Average shares with us!
What makes your body fabulous?
Ironically, I think what makes my body fabulous is my mind. I’m thankful for the body that God has given me; especially because there was a time I took advantage of it and didn’t appreciate what I had. I haven’t always been as happy with my body as I am now and struggled with food a couple years back. But I’ve trained my mind to see what others see, what my husband sees.
What is your favorite thing about how you look? And why?
My favorite thing about how I look is my ethnicity. I like that you can’t pin point what my nationality is. My mother is Dominican and my father was Italian, so I have quite the mix going on. I could look African American, Hispanic, and Middle Eastern-I love the ambiguity of it all. If I had to pick a specific physical feature it would have to be my butt;)
What are your favorite things to wear to flatter your body or just help you feel good?
I find it a little ironic that I used to despise pants/jeans because they are my go-to piece of clothing now, especially if they have a fun print or are a pretty color- I’m sold! Just add a simple white tee and a statement necklace and I’m ready to go. The trends of printed pants and colored denim are just so versatile- you can be dress up or down and the remixing possibilities are endless. Oh, and a fun pair of wedges are another feel good item that I love.
When it comes to finding clothes, what are some issues you come across?
And how do you solve them? Ah, don’t even get me started! I know I’m thin but my proportions are not the ‘norm’ so I always have trouble finding pants/jeans that fit flawlessly. My thighs and my butt are bigger than my calves or my waist, so if one section fits perfectly the other looks weird. I have to be picky where I buy pants because of this and I’m weary to shop online since I can’t try them on. Luckily I’ve found that ASOS is pretty on the money with their sizes or thrift stores with their old school measurements.
What role do you think the media plays in body acceptance?
I think the media plays a significant and important role in body acceptance. We are told at a very young age what is acceptable and beautiful – from magazines, television shows, movies, even Barbie dolls! And with the new forms of social media and blogging, what is acceptable and seen as beautiful is still not realistically the norm. I think we have a responsibility as bloggers to not only break stereotypes but to show people that you can be beautiful with any body type, at any age, in a variety of colors.
What are your thoughts on female body acceptance and appreciation?
To tell you the truth I was very nervous and hesitant to submit to YBiF because this place I’m in, where I legitimately think my body is fabulous, is new to me. I’ve realized that if you want to truly accept and appreciate your body you have to be willing to put in the work. With that said, appreciate what God has given you. I’ve learned to appreciate that bit of skin around my waist, the fact that my feet are crooked and my unruly Dominican curls? Why, because this is the way He intended me to be. 100% me!
