No Sew

DISCLAIMER: I had a hard time narrowing down the 60+ pictures my friend Ashley took for me to 10 or less, so this post is pretty picture heavy. (Sorry)

If you’ve been hanging out with my on Twitter and Instagram (or are one of my friends in real life), then you know that I have been crushing on tulle skirts and tutus for a while now! I decided sometime last year that I would make one, but like most things on my DIY to-do list, it took me forever to actually get around to it. Originally, I was planning to make the skirt on my sewing machine (of which I have no idea how to do, lol), but after chatting with some of my Instagram pals, I wanted to make a skirt that ANYONE could make.

I remembered seeing little tutus on mommy blogs through Pinterest, so I did a bit of googling, found this tutorial from Simply Real Moms, and made an adult version of the tutu Danielle made for her adorable daughter :-). However, I used elastic (sewn together at the two ends) instead of ribbon for the waist band, and I bought yards of fabric instead of spools of tulle (I ended up using about 20 yards of tulle, not all bought at once because I thought 10 yards would be enough at first). I recommend that you follow Danielle and buy the spools of tulle instead of yards of fabric because it took me FOREVER to cut the fabric into strips 5″ wide, lol.   Because I bought yards of fabric, I used the length of each 5″ strip as is, which is around 58″ (this will vary based on how long you want it; keep in mind that I’m 5’9″).   Also, depending on how you plan to wear your skirt, you may want to make a lining for your skirt. I didn’t attempt a lining because I wanted to wear shorts or mini skirts in different colors under it as a little peek a boo as we head into the warm months down here in Houston.

Sweatshirt: Proenza Schouler NM + Target- Target (no longer in store, but I found some on Ebay) ; Shoes: BCBG; Earrings; vintage- Black Boutique

Black on Black Floral Clutch Cover (made from vintage jacket)- Clutched & Covered (not yet listed; email me to inquire)

Is anyone ever truly to old for a tutu? I’d like to think not :-). If you agree, will you be giving this simple no-sew DIY a try? If a full tutu is not your think, it also makes for a cool gift for a girl in your life!!

(my facial expression in this picture tickles me so, lol)

Can you give instruction on how much elastic to use? I’m going to do this but think I’d like to do it on Elastic as you did as opposed to a ribbon.

How many spools of 6″ tulle would I need to make one floor length ? I’m 5’4″ and a size 14. It doesn’t have to be as thick (fluffy). I would like it for Halloween .

  • Did you do something to the tulle to make it fluff so much?
