Your Body Is Fabulous- Ria
The YBIF series was started as a result of a book I started writing many years ago, “Your Body Is Fabulous: Dress Like It,” because I feel style and fashion is nothing if you don’t love the body you’re dressing. So, every Thursday I feature a lovely lady, bloggers as well as other gorgeous ladies I know or meet, who tell us what makes their bodies fabulous! The purpose is to empower women to to accept and love their bodies’ as they are by showing women with various body types, skin colors, hair textures, and more. This week I bring to you the fantastic Ria of Ria Michelle.
What makes your body fabulous?
http://grrl-meat.tumblr.com/post/40495617312 Ha, my body has changed a lot in the past few years and at first I was like whaaaat? I don’t know about this, but now I think it’s great and fits me and who I want to be quite well.
What is your favorite thing about how you look? And why?
My favorite thing about how I look would probably be my limbs, my legs especially but my arms too. They’re very long and they sort of gives me the illusion of being taller despite being just under 5’7. I’ve always wanted to be as tall as my mom who is 5’9. A guy once said to me that I should never wear flats (as a compliment) and I remember being so irritated with the comment…yeah I have nice legs but I’m also working on set of a photoshoot, do I really need to walk around in heels to please your eyeballs or should I wear appropriate shoes for my comfort. Ugh.
What are your favorite things to wear to flatter your body or just help you feel good?
I love loose fitting pieces so that I feel my most comfortable. I’ll usually alternate one loose/one body hugging item. Lately I’ve been obsessed with crop tops and high waisted bottoms like a skater skirt or a flowy maxi. Easy to wear and so 90s cool.
When it comes to finding clothes, what are some issues you come across? And how do you solve them?
I’m pretty blessed that I don’t have too much trouble with clothes or shoes. My boobs are not small but they’re not large so I don’t generally have to worry about my bust. I’d say since my butt has gotten bigger some pieces even though they are my size they don’t like they used to and some things that run small don’t fit at all. I tried on a pair of size 0 pants from 4 or 5 years ago like how did I ever get into these. Then I tried on a 2 and they fit…but I’m not a size 2 anymore either and I have things in my size that don’t fit. Clothing can be so strange I think THAT’S the issue.
What role do you think the media plays in body acceptance?
http://feminist-fury.tumblr.com/post/40070651007/society-has-put-up-so-many-boundaries-so-many Ugh the media is the worst thing you can look at. Being body positive is something they just miss entirely. If you want body acceptance expose yourself to foreign television particularly British television. You’ll see people of all walks of life portrayed in equal ways. It’s so rare to see someone above a size 4 in a romantic role/position on tv in America at least not without her weight being mentioned at least once. In English television I’ve seen it and never once was the person a butt of a joke or something about their appearance brought up as a negative.
What are your thoughts on female body acceptance and appreciation?
I think my feelings can be summed up in this http://solohabloespanol.tumblr.com/post/36656877205/how-you-love-you-how-you-see-you-how-you-treat I think it’s important to be healthy and as long as you’re healthy you should be happy. I don’t want anyone to be a danger to themselves or unhealthy. Remember everyone deserves to be treated with respect and dignity don’t let anyone treat you like less than a person because you’re too skinny or too fat for them. When I was younger, people would ask me RIDICULOUS things like “girl do you eat?” (AT LUNCH mind you) and say things to me like “eat a sandwich” (sometimes like it was a compliment) and I’d laugh and explain myself away I wish I knew what I know now so I could tell them exactly where to stick it.
Don’t you just <3 Ria?! She is so lovely and honest. The links she shared in her responses are really great!!
