Your Body Is Fabulous- Latoya
The YBIF series was started as a result of a book I started writing many years ago, “Your Body Is Fabulous: Dress Like It,” because I feel style and fashion is nothing if you don’t love the body you’re dressing. So, every Thursday I feature a lovely lady, bloggers as well as other gorgeous ladies I know or meet, who tell us what makes their bodies fabulous! The purpose is to empower women to to accept and love their bodies’ as they are by showing women with various body types, skin colors, hair textures, and more. Today, the lovely Latoya of Sugar and Shimmer shares with us!
What makes your body fabulous?
The fact that is has been through so much and is still kicking! I was in a terrible car accident 6 years ago that left me with some pretty lasting pain (which I receive steroid epidurals for now), and even with all of that, I am still up, moving, and looking fab (lol) makes my body amazing in my eyes!
What is your favorite thing about how you look? And why?
My legs and my face/smile. I was very athletic (and super skinny) growing up, and I guess all of that hard work paid off because I still have the track runner’s legs to prove it! As for my face, I just love how young I look….that will be a great thing to have in my old age lol!
What are your favorite things to wear to flatter your body or just help you feel good?
Shorts – my legs always look great so that is the one thing I can wear no matter what and know that I look good….even if I may not feel the best that day. Fake it til you make it right?!
When it comes to finding clothes, what are some issues you come across? And how do you solve them?
Ohhhhh, the twins definitely. I hate them! lol Seriously…it’s so hard sometimes finding shirts/dresses/ that are cute, girly, and can be worn with a bra (without straps showing). I see some of the cutest tops sometimes but there is no way I can wear them. And don’t even get me started on all the tiny triangle top bikinis out there….*sigh*
What role do you think the media plays in body acceptance?
I think the media can play a huge role in it because they constantly bombard us all with this almost unattainable view of “beauty”; however, I also feel that a strong sense of self confidence (starting from family early on) could take away some of the influence the media has. Of course we all have our ugly duckling phase growing up, but having someone in your corner to tell you how beautiful you are definitely has helped me not fall into thinking I should look like this person or that person from tv or the magazines…I love me!
What are your thoughts on female body acceptance and appreciation?
I think it is extremely important to accept you – period. Do I like my boobs…eh, not so much lol. But I love my body as a whole – I love my shape, I love that I don’t have to workout all of the time to look good despite my gross eating habits (lol), I love the fact that there is only one me. I hope that through female empowerment efforts (like Tyra Bank’s and the Dove “Real Women” ads) that more women will see that beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, colors, and nationalities. Love who you are, because you are amazing!
Wow Toya has been through so much, and loves her fabulous body! I’m inspired. I love when she said “…accept you-period.” Love yourself today, without nay questions or doubts, but just because you are you. What other reason do you need?
