SMILE

May 18, 2012 in Cooking, Family, Life, Readers, Reasons to Smile

(I have no idea what I was laughing at, but Reiko always cracks me up when she takes my pics, or in general really)

Hey there lovelies, and happy Friday to you!!  Is it just me, or did this week fly by?!?  I hope your week was great!  Mine was rather lovely, productive, and at time fun, much better than last week, but I am certainly looking forward to the weekend and hopefully sleeping in :-) .  Every week I share pictures (from my cell phone, via Instagram, or regular iPhone camera) of things that made me smile.

These are some things that made me smile this week:

  • Going through my nail polish collection to pick my polish(es) for the week.
  • Making my mom a healthy and delicious meal for Mother’s Day (healthy really isn’t my thing so she was geeked about it)!
  • My adorable god-daughter (or as her mom calls her, my mini me), who cinched the dress I bought her with a belt, and couldn’t leave the house with pearls. <3 her!!
  • Getting handmade Mother’s Day cards from my niece and nephew. It was nice to know they acknowledged the afforest I’ve put in to raising them for the last 9 months.
  • Simple glitter nails after a half-moon mani gone wrong :-) .
  • Giving my mom her own outfit post on the blog this week.
  • A wonderful comment from a friend and previous client that reminded me that I am having a positive impact on someone’s life, which is my core goal in life!
  • Pretty vintage dresses from Dear Golden.

  • A late dinner of wine, pizza, and gelato with one of my favorite girlies, Ashley (by the way, if you’re local entrepreneur, you must check out her Brain Candy for Biz workshop!).

What are some things that made you smile this week?

Your Body Is Fabulous- Merl

May 17, 2012 in Blogger Friends, Body Acceptance, Empowerment, Female Empowerment, Style, Style Inspires, YBIF

Every Thursday I feature a lovely lady, bloggers as well as other gorgeous ladies I know or meet, who tell us what makes their bodies fabulous! The purpose is to empower women to to accept and love their bodies’ as they are by showing women with various body types, skin colors, hair textures, and more. This week I share with you the wonderful Merl owner Mo Vintage, and Clyde’s Rebirth!!
What makes your body fabulous?
The fact that it can handle getting abused on a daily basis thanks to my clumsy nature and keep on trucking.. seriously I have over 20 bruises on my person right now! You’d think my cats ganged up on me at night. But really the fact that it’s strong, womanly and uniquely mine. I have little quirks and scars that technically mar the perfection, but they are memories I’ll keep with me always.

What is your favorite thing about how you look? And why?
The ginger locks atop my noggin for sure. I can say this proudly now, as I spent YEARS of my youth trying desperately to have any hue but red. I just wanted to be like everyone else with their ‘normal’ blonde or brunette hair and couldn’t appreciate the rare and unique gift that is my fiery red mop. While I’m on this love fest, I’ll also toss in some kudos to my curves and hazel/brown eyes :).
What are your favorite things to wear to flatter your body or just help you feel good?
To flatter my body, I would say anything form fitting with some stretch. I live in bodycon dresses in the winter, since I can wear thick enough tights that I don’t feel like a hoochie.. but the bottom line with anything I put on my body is that I have to feel comfortable. I could be wearing the most beautiful dress ever crafted, but if it pinches or limits my movement, I will feel horrible which translates into looking horrible. I will make exceptions for shoes on occasion, but only if I don’t have to walk or stand for long periods of time ;).

When it comes to finding clothes, what are some issues you come across? And how do you solve them?
JEANS. Being a curvy girl, jeans were my enemy for many years. If I found a pair that fit the rump, they gaped big time in the waist. I couldn’t find any that fit my waist because they couldn’t go over my hips. Though I’ve never, and will never go full on jegging style, I have grown to vehemently love some stretchy denim, the more high waisted the better. They fit like a dream, suck in just a bit while allowing me freedom of movement. A merl’s best friend fo sho.

What role do you think the media plays in body acceptance?
I think it both plays a huge role, and also shouldn’t be allowed that much clout. Young women are much more impressionable than older women, and the pressure to be the prettiest, skinniest, sexiest will always be there no matter how many steps the media or celebrity role models attempt to feature a more realistic image. That is not to say that those steps shouldn’t be mandatory and wouldn’t foster a greater acceptance of an individual’s beauty but they won’t eradicate the problem entirely. I think it should start in the home, by providing a solid groundwork for loving your body, that way when a young woman enters puberty and the pressure to look a certain way doesn’t have as much effect. All that said, I do think that the amount of photoshopping done on models these days is obscene. I know Glamour recently stated that they will resist going to extreme lengths in their retouching, but didn’t claim to eradicate it entirely. It makes me wonder if retailers featured ‘real’ [and not just beautiful plus size models, but real women of all sizes with quirks and imperfections that accrue from a life well spent] women more, if their sales would actually increase? Sure everyone likes to look at that attractive, skinny model in the clothes.. but what if they saw someone just like them in those garments instead?

What are your thoughts on female body acceptance and appreciation?
I recently read an article [http://feministing.com/2012/04/02/there-is-no-right-way-to-hate-your-body/] that literally took the words out of my heart and spoke them with articulated clarity. The author Chloe took Glenn Marla’s quote “there is no wrong way to have a body” {brilliant in and of itself} and proposed a spin: There is no right way to hate your body. I could quote the entire article, but I’ll let you and your readers read it first hand on the website. It really struck home with me though..not only because while I, for the most part, respect my body, I also have days of negative, hate filled thoughts. And that’s incredibly absurd. My body is healthy, blessed with curves, fair skin and an over abundance of freckles. I have a crooked nose, scars on every limb and cellulite. But I love it. I will never be a size 2, and that’s ok. It doesn’t make me any more, or any less of a woman that is a healthy size 2 or 22, but it’s what works for me. I have no grounds whatsoever to hate it, and so many to love it. I think that no matter what your current size, you need to learn to love exactly how your body looks and feels and functions at this time. You should always strive to be the healthiest in mind and body as possible.. but not kill yourself if you aren’t a body builder or constantly serene and content with your current state of affairs. Count every positive, and quit tallying up the negative!
I’m so smitten with Merl’s red hair, freckles, and awesome smile!!  I love what she said about not giving the media clout and focusing not he positives instead of tallying up the negatives! Loves her :-) .

Festival Casual

May 16, 2012 in Blogger Friends, Etsy, Life, Outfit, Style, Vintage/Retro/Thrifted, What I Wore

Hey there darlings! Happy hump day to you!!  A few weeks ago, I went to the International Festival with my nephew and Reiko.  It was warm out, but a previous day of brought a insane about of dine, so I wanted to dress for it all! I don’t wear shorts often because the ones I find in the store are way too short and/or tight, so my hunt for short’s like these vintage one’s that I discovered in my mom’s closet continues, as does my attachment to these red beauties :-) .

Whenever I wear this shirt, I hope someone get’s inspired to be the change they wish to see in the world, even if they don’t tell me :-) .

We ran into my friend Ashley, whose company, Medley Inc., handled the pr for the Ifest this year!

My nephew and I shared a turkey leg!  I hadn’t had one in years, and it was everything I hoped it would be and more, lol.

He HAD to have the volcano drink, but how could I blame him? It looked pretty cool, but didn’t taste that great (to me, lol).

Duster: Pegasus- vintage from Decades (similar); Shirt: Lucy and Carmen; Shorts: Unknown- vintage from mom’s closet (similar here or here); Shoes (sold out buy these are similar) and Handbag- Zara

I’m pretty sure I was talking some trash to Reiko in this picture, lol.

I don’t know why, but I have such an affinity for shadows and silhouettes, so I’m pretty smitten with these photos.

I must give a shot out to the lovely Reiko for taking the pictures!! Oh yeah, check out her blog to see the re-design I did for her :-) .

Pastel Whiteout

May 15, 2012 in Outfit, Style, Sunday Style, Vintage/Retro/Thrifted, What I Wore, Worn Several Ways

While I am definitely a lot more drawn to bold colors, I have a soft spot for pastel shades of pink (and green too, though I could use some mint in my closet), so this blazer that I scored on my first ever visit to Goodwill last year is one of my favorite pieces in my closet! It’ve vintage circa the 1980′s so I had to get it shortened a bit, but that’s what makes it even more special.

I love knowing I own a garment that no one else will have on :-) .  I certainly am not the kind of girl to get mad when I go to an event and discover someone has the same thing on (I think it’s maybe happened to me once), but it’s also never really  something I worry about since I wear a nice share of vintage and/or altered clothing (or something, most women in Texas would never wear, lol).  How do you feel about running into someone wearing the same thing that you’re wearing?

I’m usually pretty scared to wear white, in fear that someone or myself will spill something on it, which is probably why I haven’t worn this dress since last July.  However, it’s so soft and flowy that I’m determined to wear it more this Spring/Summer! I’m smitten with the white on white stripes :-) .

Blazer: Judy Hornby- vintage from Goodwill (similar); Dress: Liz Claiborne- vintage from Second Wind Vintage (similar); Shoes: Jessica Simpson (suede version)

Though I don’t always photograph everything I wear, I am big on wearing my clothes repeatedly, so I want to start sharing how I’ve worn things before, so here’s how I’ve worn the pink blazer before.

EVERYTHING

May 14, 2012 in Family, Fashion, Fashion Inspires, Jessica Simpson, Mom's Closet

Hey lovelies!! I truly hope you had a wonderful weekend! For those of you who are mothers, I hope your Mother’s Day was special in some or many ways!

Your eyes are not deceiving you my dears. Today’s post features someone very special, my momma!! With the news about my sister’s death (my dad’s daughter), I was a bit too out of it to create the post I had in mind before Mother’s Day arrive, but when I saw her strutting her stuff (she’s always strutting lol) on Sunday, I knew I had to make today’s style post about her!

I love this dress on my mom, or Momma Jackie, as most of friends call her (and y’all are my friends)! A woman can really do no wrong in a great wrap dress, and while I don’t currently own one (putting it on my shopping list), it is a MUST!

Bracelets: Unknown; Ring (top picture): Unknown- Stein Mart; Ring (bottom picture): Forever 21

When I saw my mom’s shoes on Sunday, I became smitten! I asked her why she didn’t buy me a pair, and she said it was because they didn’t have my size, which means I almost had them in my possession…darn it! Lol I love that I have a momma who wears and would randomly buy me fabulous shoes :-) .

Dress: Maggie Boutique- Stein Mart (similar); Necklace- Stein Mart; Shoes: Jessica Simpson- Marshall’s; Sunglasses: Old Navy

I told y’all before, in this post, how much I love my mom!  I am a momma’s girl like no other! My mom is my friend, biggest cheerleader, counselor, and so much more.  She is strong, beautiful, God-fearing, nurturing, confident, and divine. When I have to think of one word to describe my mom, the only thing I can think of is EVERYTHING!  I wish everyone could be so fortunate to have a mom as amazing as mine :-) .

HAVE AN AWESOME WEEK DARLINGS!!

P.S. Thank you your kind words of condolence upon learning about the death of my sister in last week’s SMILE post; it really means to me!

SMILE

May 11, 2012 in Family, Friends, Life, Reasons to Smile

Hey there lovelies!  How was your week?  I really hope it has been awesome!  While my week started off pretty great full of things to smile about, but on Tuesday night I learned that my older sister (my dad’s daughter) died.  While I am still grateful to God for each day and blessing, since Tuesday night, writing a past about smiling is kind of hard right now, as I will have to go out of town Saturday morning to attend the funeral of my sister, who I hadn’t seen in far too many years, but had been looking forward to seeing in July (it breaks my heart that that won’t be happening).  Anywho this post is about smiling, lol, and I have been blessed with things to smile about this week, so let me simply focus on those things :-) .  Every week I share pictures (from my cell phone, via Instagram, or regular iPhone camera) of things that made me smile.

These are some things that made me smile this week:

  • Adorable little sandals for my friend’s daughter’s birthday present (remember I told you last week I was going to a Pinkalicious party?).
  • Inspiring words found while walking around Target.
  • My niece (with her tongue out) and little cousin in the adorable photo booth at the Pinkalicious party :-) .
  • Seeing one of my childhood friends for the first time in a few years; she threw an amazing birthday party for her daughter!
  • My cute little face painting (I love getting involved in birthday party activities, lol).
  • Playing around in the backyard with my niece and little cousin to create nighttime flashlight photography.
  • Finding a polaroid picture, among many others, of me practicing my posing, lol!
  • Celebrating my granny’s 80th birthday with my family and loved ones!
  • Finishing my first 15 minute ab workout on the Nike app (it was intense!).
  • Scripture reminding me that prayer+thankfulness=peace.
NOW IT’S YOUR TURN TO TELL ME SOME THINGS THAT MADE YOU SMILE THIS WEEK!
